If you haven't gotten to stop by for one last plate of airy popovers and strawberry butter, this is your last chance: beloved Upper West Side eatery Popover Cafe will close its doors on Sunday after 32 years at its Amsterdam Avenue space.
As previously reported, owner Carol Baer had been in talks with a buyer for the popular cafe, but the deal fell through. A sign posted in the restaurant's window notes that it lost its lease; Baer told us last month that a 24-hour bistro and bakery will be moving into the space next.
Popover is one of several UWS mainstays to get pushed out of a neighborhood increasingly flooded with chains and banks, with longstanding pizza and burger joint Big Nick's shuttering over the summer. And though Popover has struggled to find its footing after recent financial struggles, its simple dishes and warm, welcoming ambiance made it a neighborhood favorite.
On a personal note, my grandmother and I used to stop by the cafe for milkshakes when I was a child, and I have fond memories of playing with some of Baer's namesake teddy bears that lined the booths and windows. It will be missed.
The cafe will be open as usual from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on its final day.
