Police are looking for a man who punched a woman on Saturday in an unprovoked assault that fits the profile of the so-called knockout attacks.
According to the NYPD, a 33-year-old woman walking with her 7-year-old daughter near East 12th Street and Elm Avenue at 2:45 p.m. on December 21. A man approached her, punched her in the back of her head and then fled. The victim suffered minor injuries to her knee and hands when she fell.
The police released a sketch of the suspect and described him as being about 5'7"-5'9" and 170-185 pounds, with short braids. He was wearing a black wool cap, green jacket, and dark-colored jeans.
Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto Crime Stoppers' website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or by texting their tips to CRIMES (274637), then enter TIP577.
Other so-called knockout attacks are unprompted assaults on people, usually with someone punching them in the face or in the back of the head. Of course, the knockout attacks may also be a media-inflamed trend story. But regardless of whether the knockout game is real, pedestrians have been punched without provocation in various NYC neighborhoods, and one man faces hate crime charges for an alleged knockout assault in Borough Park.
