Upscale Mexican chainlet Toloache has expanded with another restaurant, this time in the heart of Greenwich Village on Thompson and Bleecker. Chef Julian Medina and partner Louis Skibar, who run locations in Midtown and the UES as well as two Yerba Buena outposts (and Coppelia in Chelsea), debuted Toloache Thompson last week in a two-story, 3,000 square foot space that boasts an open guacamole and ceviche kitchen as well as seating for 90. Sticking to their established style, this new Toloache sports colorful tiles and lots of natural light from windows on both floors.
The same menu of elegant Mexican fare will be offered at the new location, including a variety of guacamoles, tacos and hot dishes. Try their decadent and delicious staple, Quesadilla de Huitaloche y Trufas ($15) with unctuous mushroom flavor and Manchego cheese. Or the hearty Lechon Prensado ($27), a form of carnitas made with suckling pig and served with corn pudding, roasted chile salsa and pickled gourd. Signature items include the Arrachera ($28), flap sirloin with corn dumplings and crispy pig skin and Tostada de Cangrejo ($15), a crab meat toastada with sea urchin, avocado and peanut salsa.
