In what appears to be a battle of the gym teacher stereotypes, a former gym teacher at a Manhattan private school claims his boss, a lesbian, fired him for being too straight. The War on Men is on, America.
[UPDATE BELOW] Gregory Kenney, a 50-year-old Long Island resident and married father of three, says he was employed as a gym teacher and coach at the Trinity School on the Upper West Side for 16 years; but in June 2012, athletic director Pat Krieger allegedly let him go because of his "traditional family status," according to the suit. Before Kenney was fired, he says Krieger dumped three coaching positions on him instead of his required two, working him extra hours on nights and weekends and keeping him from his familial obligations. When Kenney complained, according to the suit, Krieger told him "We all make choices," and berated him. "I love the school. I love my job. I enjoyed the kids I was with and the classes I taught, but I have a wife and family. I'm not 16," he told the Daily News.
Krieger, who started working as Trinity's athletic director in 2009, reportedly claims Kenney was fired because he illegally sublet the apartment the school gave him, and that he left his students unsupervised; Kenney, meanwhile, alleges these claims are untrue, and asserts that Krieger gave preferential treatment to "single, younger females without children and discriminated against [him] because of his gender, sexual orientation, ‘traditional family status,’ and age.'"
Calls to Kenney's attorney have not been returned, and Trinity spokesperson Kevin Ramsey tells us the school has not seen a lawsuit filed and cannot comment on the allegations; however, Ramsey notes that Trinity "does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, religion, national or ethnic origin, disability, or sexual orientation in administration of its employment policies, educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs."
Update 5:12 p.m.: John Allman, Trinity's head of school, released the following statement regarding allegations against Krieger:
You’ll likely have seen or heard about news reports of a lawsuit filed by a former Trinity employee against the School and certain School employees. While we cannot comment on the particulars of pending litigation we can say, without reservation, that all of the allegations are utterly false and entirely baseless. Athletic Director Pat Krieger has the School’s unqualified support and entire confidence, as does former physical education teacher and coach Anne Gravel. We are deeply dismayed that our former employee has chosen this course of action and has made allegations that are so obviously counter to policy and practice at Trinity School and to the spirit and culture that is lived every day here.
