On an increasingly "happening" stretch of Williamsburg's Broadway that not so long ago only had only Peter Luger for nightlife, a downright gorgeous new bar, restaurant, and music venue called Baby's All Right has quietly opened for business. The 5,000 square foot venue, located on Broadway near the corner of Bedford Avenue, is located in the former home of Hy-Grade Provisions, which was one time the world’s foremost manufacturer of hot dogs. Now Macaulay Culkin's band Pizza Undergound is playing there Friday night.
Co-owner Zachary Mexico, author of the book China Underground and former booker for Pianos, brought in the Brooklyn design and construction firm Hecho, Inc, who designed The Box, The Flatiron Room, and Building on Bond. Naturally, the place looks fantastic, with plenty of creative flourishes, like wooden crocodile sconces and a replica of the maze from The Shining on the floor of the performance space.
The front room consists of a spacious bar and lounge, split into two sides, and in the back there's the cozy music venue, located right behind the bar, which features a retractable wall to prevent sound bleed when necessary. Pretty programmable LED walls in the front bar and behind the stage were designed by industrial design "legend" Tucker Viemeister, who created the JetBlue Terminal 5 "marketplace," among other things.
Chef Ronald Murray, veteran of the kitchens at Bouley and Acme, is still finalizing the menu, which we're told emphasizes "forward-thinking bar food and ingredient-driven share plates with a lot of healthy vegetarian options." But there's a solid selection of beer on tap, and cocktails range in price from $10-$12, with options including the "Pink Baby" (frozen blend of vodka, grapefruit, lime, mate) and the "All Right All Right" (Lunazul tequila, yellow chartreuse, fresh lime, agave rim).
Check out the calendar on the Baby's All Right website for upcoming shows; the New Year's Eve lineup features DIIIV, Perfect Pussy, Potty Mouth, Nothing, Ratking, "and more." That's pretty indie rock, but Mexico says the venue will host live music "of all stripes," from bluegrass to post-punk, traditional Nepalese music and fringe electronica. He's also planning on booking comedy shows, panel discussions, "and lectures from interesting artists, mystics, and visionaries." Stay tuned.
