The McCarren Ice Rink has been open only two weeks, and it's already a hotspot for crowds of local skaters and Pat Kiernan. And it might be getting bigger, better and badder: future plans for the rink include doubling its size and maybe even adding a sledding chute. But where is the Slip 'n Slide?
The rink, which opened on November 15th, is about 60 feet wide by 120 feet long right now, and accommodates about 300 skaters at a time. But according to the Daily News, plans drawn up by the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn suggest the rink could extend over the McCarren pool if enough people show up. OSA also proposed adding a frozen chute for sledders, since North Brooklyn has far more bespoke bars than hills.
Other proposed plans include special activity nights, like speed-date-and-skate parties and snowman-building contests. The Parks Department is holding off on cementing any of these plans until they've got a more solid grasp on the rink's popularity, though in its first week-and-a-half, the rink drew over 5,000 skaters, none of whom pooped on the ice.
OSA is paying the city $1,000 for the rink this year, and will increase their payments every year, ultimately paying $17,000 by the 12th year of the rink. They expect 20,000 skaters to try out the ice before the rink closes up shop in early January.
