Tomorrow is one of NYC's most famous fall traditions: The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. This year, besides the big balloons and floats, there will be performers Joan Jett (and the Blackhearts), Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, the Goo Goo Dolls, Megan Hilty, Kristen Chenoweth, Ariana Grande and Austin Mahone. Here's the route:

The parade starts—at 9 a.m.—at Central Park West and 77th Street and goes down CPW. It travels across Central Park South, then parade heads down 6th Avenue, and then across 34th Street to Macy's. This also means many streets closures!
Balloon inflation just started and continues until 10 p.m. tonight. Of course, the big balloons, like Hello Kitty, Pikachu, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Spider-Man might not even fly if winds exceed 23 mph or wind gusts are measured at 34 mph, thanks to wind rules put in place after some high profile balloon vs. street lamp crashes. The NY Times reports:
Joe Picca, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service, said, “What we are seeing right now is that at about 7 a.m. winds will be out of the west-northwest at about 25 miles per hour, but gusts could be as high as 40 miles per hour.” Mr. Picca continued, “But we expect the winds to be on a downward trend as the day goes on.”
He noted that a challenge in forecasting winds in New York City has to do with the “canyon effect,” with the tall buildings along the parade route creating a tunnel. Historically, the blocks near Times Square have been particularly difficult for the balloons’ handlers, with the open area allowing winds to whip with added force.
Tomorrow morning city agencies will make the decision about whether the big balloons will be allowed out to play along the skyline.
