Police have identified the cyclist killed in an alleged hit and run early Monday morning in Williamsburg as 32-year-old Christopher Meyer. "Christopher was a rare spirit," says James Bradley, the owner of Sound Fix, a record store where Meyer worked for at least five years. "He was sweet and kind and he made everyone laugh. He was just a wonderful, wonderful person."

"The only bad thing I could say about him was that he rode that bike everywhere and it worried me and I told him so," Bradley said.

According to an NYPD statement, police responded to a 911 call of a person being struck by a vehicle in the northbound lane of Meeker Avenue near Frost Street around 3:53 a.m. Monday morning.

Investigators are in possession of video footage showing a cyclist riding directly underneath the BQE before hitting a curb and falling into the northbound lane, according to Harry Rosenblum, the co-founder of The Brooklyn Kitchen, who spoke with NYPD Detective Gerard Sheehan earlier today. Rosenblum's business is located at the intersection of Frost Street and Meeker Ave, but Rosenblum said his security camera did not capture footage of a cyclist around the time of the crash.

The manager of an Ecuadorian restaurant with a view of the incident facing east says police asked if they had video evidence of the incident, but noted that the restaurant doesn't have any security cameras. An auto body shop located next to The Brooklyn Kitchen declined to comment. The NYPD has not yet responded to a request for comment about the investigation.

Detective Sheehan was also involved in two notable crash investigations into the deaths of cyclists Stefanos Tsigrimanis and Mathieu Lefevre. In Tsigrimanis's case, Sheehan allegedly waited nearly ten days before investigating the incident. In Lefevre's, Sheehan was criticized by the family's attorney for misinterpreting traffic laws and refusing to release crucial evidence to Lefevre's family.

Bradley said Meyer, a Greenpoint resident, started working for Permanent Records after he was forced to close Sound Fix this spring. "Some people you work with and they leave, and that's that. I really thought he was going to be a friend for life."

Mike Wolf, Meyer's coworker of several years, described his friend as an avid cyclist. "[Cycling] was essential to the way he lived his life. He was always wearing his helmet and he was always had his gear and he had one pant leg tied up. To the extent I knew him he was a safe bicyclist."

Wolf described Meyer as a friendly, opinionated record store clerk with a fondness for titles on Drag City, Merge Records, and all types of metal.

"Christopher loved metal. Classic stuff from the '80s like Celtic Frost and Venom, as well as bigger names like Maiden, and he also loved the meanest current extreme metal," Wolf says.

"He was just a bright, sparkling guy. It's almost a cliché at this point, but I never heard anyone say a bad word about him.

"Whenever the police figure out whether this was an accident or a hit and run, I'll be interested in that. But right now, I'm just going to miss my friend."
