It's official: the MTA says the L and G trains will start sucking a little bit less soon, thanks to an upcoming increase in service. The Gods of North Brooklyn Smile Upon Us At Long Last.
The MTA dangled the promise in front of us last week that they might start adding more L and G trains during rush hour and on the weekends next year, and today we're told they cemented the deal, sending a letter to North Brooklyn State Assemblyman Joseph Lentol confirming the service boost.
On weekdays from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., L train riders will be treated to an increase of five round trips, shaving wait times by about half a minute. And from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, the MTA will be boosting service by 20 percent, so that colossal crowd of cool kids clogging the Union Square stop might thin out a teensy bit at night.
As for the ever-embattled G train, starting in June they'll get an increase in weekday service from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., trimming that grueling 10-minute wait down to a slightly less horrific eight and a half minutes. Though don't rejoice too soon; the MTA will be shutting down the tunnel between Nassau Ave in Greenpoint and Court Square in Long Island City for five consecutive weeks starting at the end of July. You know, for nostalgia's sake.
