Two pedestrians were killed this morning in Elmhurst when a driver lost control of his sportscar and drove onto the sidewalk.

According to an NYPD statement, a 22-year-old man was driving his 2014 Chevrolet Camaro west on Queens Boulevard near Broadway at around 7:30 a.m. when he lost control of his car near the intersection at Broadway, striking a phonebooth, a lamppost, and two parked vehicles.

Police say the driver then jumped the curb onto the sidewalk, hitting 41-year-old Mu Wang Lin and 59-year-old Manchip Cheng. Lin was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital, while Cheng was pronounced dead at the scene. Both men lived several blocks north of where the collision occurred.

The driver of the Camaro was transported to Elmhurst with minor injuries, and was taken into custody after police discovered he had two outstanding warrants for unspecified infractions. According to a law enforcement source, the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed and lost control of his car as he attempted to brake. The CIS investigation is ongoing.

According to a recent survey conducted by Transportation Alternatives, there is no shortage of speeding drivers in Elmhurst: this spring the organization clocked 237 drivers going 10 mph or more above the limit in East Elmhurst's 115th Precinct over the course of eight hours. The NYPD has increased enforcement. For the entirety of 2012, Elmhurst's 110 Precinct only handed out 177 speeding citations. Last month alone they issued 198.

Last week, three pedestrians were killed on the sidewalk by drivers who jumped curbs in Fort Greene, Mott Haven, and Wakefield.

[UPDATE]Another pedestrian was killed in Harlem this afternoon by a truck that jumped the curb after being hit by a cab.
