[UPDATE: Video below.] Five teenagers were seriously injured this morning in Queens by a driver who lost control of his SUV and drove up onto the sidewalk. According to the FDNY, the injuries are non-life threatening, but all five students were rushed to Elmhurst Hospital in serious condition. An NYPD spokesman gave us this breakdown of the injuries:
- Two 13-year-old girls sustained broken legs and lacerations.
- Another 13-year-old girl sustained lacerations.
- A twelve-year-old boy sustained lacerations.
- A 14-year-old boy sustained a swollen arm and lacerations.
The students were run over on the sidewalk outside IS 73Q at 71st Street and Grand Avenue in Maspeth, shortly before 8 a.m. According to an NYPD spokesman, the driver, identified only as a 40-year-old Asian man, lost control of his Honda Pilot while trying to park. One witness tells NBC New York bystanders helped lift the car off of a child who was pinned beneath it.
The driver remained at the scene and the investigation is ongoing. The crash comes days after the school year began with new speed cameras installed outside a handful of the city's most dangerous school zones, in an attempt to crack down on reckless driving.
Update 2:15 p.m.: The NY Post has obtained terrifying video of the collision:
