A push of warm, humid sub-tropical air is making today feel more like mid-July than one of the waning days of summer. This morning's low of 77 is one degree higher than the normal high for September 11th. Today's high should reach the low 90s most places and could top out in the mid 90s in Manhattan and northern New Jersey.
In case you were wondering, the record high of 99 degrees, which was last reached in 1983, should be safe. An inversion, where the temperature starts increasing with altitude, sitting about a half-mile above the ground will prevent the hot and humid air from rising high enough to produce clouds for much of the day, but we may see a few clouds and have a slight chance of showers early this evening.
A much better chance of showers and thunderstorms will develop tomorrow as a cold front approaches from the Midwest. These don't look to be especially violent storms but some spots may see gusty winds and heavy downpours in the usual late afternoon/early evening time slot. Thursday's high will be in the mid 80s.
Much cooler and drier air will follow the frontal passage. Friday's high will be a more seasonable 75 degrees while Saturday will struggle to reach 70 under sunny skies. Sunday isn't looking to be much warmer.
