Another day, another terrifying food-related health scare. This time, the alarm sounds in Monmouth County, NJ, where one confirmed and 26 suspected cases of the mumps have been linked to popular Belmar nightclub D'Jais Bar and Grill.
D'Jais, which gained widespread repute a few years ago for not being as esteemed in the eyes of the Jersey Shore cast as the clubs in Italy, has agreed to shut down temporarily this weekend, after a number of patrons and employees came down with "varying degrees of mumps-like symptoms,"; at least one of the 27 suspected cases has been confirmed as mumps by the county's health department. Employees reportedly started feeling sick over the weekend: "The employees went to the doctors and then all of a sudden it became, well gee, they're saying we may have the mumps," co-owner Frank Sementa told FOX News. Bar owners plan to spearhead a thorough cleaning of the venue before getting the fistpump going again next week.
The viral disease is pretty rare these days, but there have been a few outbreaks in the United States in recent years, including a major outbreak in Brooklyn's Orthodox community in 2009 and 2010. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms (if there are any) include swollen, painful salivary glands that cause your cheeks to puff out, along with fever, headaches, trouble chewing and swallowing and loss of appetite. The disease is easily spread via saliva (shared drinks and utensils, sneezing, hot-'n-heavy dance floor makeouts), and while cases usually resolve themselves, people with mumps have to be quarantined until they're no longer contagious.
