A Bushwick man has been charged with rape after a woman told police he dosed her with MDMA, DNAinfo reports.

According to the news site, 31-year-old Soutrik Pramanik met the victim on Craigslist, and the two went on a date to a restaurant near Pramanik's apartment. She told police that'd she'd had five glasses of wine with dinner, and insisted that she lie down. The two returned to Pramanik's apartment, where the victim alleges he "started to kiss her and climb on top of her." She reportedly pushed him away and told him she was thirsty:

He went to the kitchen and returned with a glass of water, which she quickly complained tasted bitter and appeared too murky as though it had a powdered substance in it. Pramanik then got her a glass of orange juice, but that also tasted bitter. So she went to the kitchen and drank straight from the OJ bottle, which tasted fine. She turned to Pramanik and asked why the glass of juice tasted foul.

Pramanik then allegedly admitted he had given her “Molly,” and then tried to undress the woman and fondle her.

The story goes on to say that the victim tried to resist but could not feel her arms, and that Pramanik went on to rape her several times. The victim spent the night, and the two ate breakfast and smoked pot together the next morning.

She remained in the apartment while Pramanik went to buy ice cream and additional condoms, allegedly raping her one more time before she left his home and called the police. According to DNAinfo, the victim was deemed by police to have been still "suffering the effects of a drug," and is "the victim of a “drug-facilitated rape.” The story did not say whether investigators had completed a toxicology report.

According to the Department of Justice, the effects of MDMA include "increased motor
activity, alertness, heart rate and blood pressure." There is no indication that it causes loss of feeling in limbs.

Molly has been the target of intensified media coverage since the weekend, when two Electric Zoo attendees died after ingesting possibly poisonous batches of the drug.

Dr. John Halpern, a psychiatrist at Harvard who has conducted several MDMA studies, told the Times in June that he's found no evidence that the drug impairs cognitive performance. “A drug that actually does kill brain cells — which MDMA doesn’t — is alcohol,” he said.

There are also several claims that pure MDMA can be used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety in terminally ill patients.
