[UPDATE BELOW] A remote control helicopter killed a man, possibly decapitating him, near Calvert Vaux Park in Gravesend, Brooklyn.
Fire officials responded to reports of "severe head trauma" around 3:14 p.m., an FDNY spokesperson said. According to the Wall Street Journal, the 19-year-old victim was standing near Bay 44th Street and Shore Parkway when the toy struck him in the head, killing him. It's unclear whether the victim was flying the helicopter himself, or whether he was simply a bystander.
We'll update this story as more information becomes available.
Update, 4:56 p.m.:NBC reports that the accident occurred when the man lost control of the helicopter and it plummeted from the sky, slicing off the top of his head.
Calvert Vaux Park is one of the city's designated "model aircraft fields."
Update, 5:45 p.m.: The Wall Street Journal has identified the victim as Roman Pirozek of Woodhaven, Queens. Pirozek's Facebook page indicates that he was a model helicopter enthusiast, with nearly all of his photos depicting aircraft of some kind.
