September is here, which means meteorological summer, June through August, is over. Let's take a quick look at the temperature summary before moving on to today's crummy forecast.

Averaging 75.7 degrees, this past summer was warmer than normal, winding up the 27th warmest summer since 1869, when daily observations started in Central Park. Most of that warmth can be attributed to a couple of very hot days at the start of June and several days during in the July heat wave. Five days this summer were at least ten degrees warmer than average and only one day was at least ten degrees below normal. Since the heat wave ended on July 21st daily lows have been exactly average while our daily highs have run 1.2 degrees cooler than normal.

While meteorological summer may be over, we still have plenty of warm weather to look forward to in the coming week. For today and tomorrow that warm weather will be accompanied by showers and thunderstorms as warm air from the south runs up against a cold front that's stuck up around Albany. The air is thick with moisture so watch out for heavy downpours if it does rain. This afternoon's high will be in the sticky low 80s.

Another round of showers and thunderstorms are possible tomorrow morning ahead of the cold front's passage. The front looks like it will arrive around mid-morning on Tuesday. Once it passes the humidity will drop and the skies should begin to clear. Tuesday's high will again be in the low 80s. Highs in the low 80s and clear skies are expected for Wednesday and Thursday before a dry cold front cools us down to the mid 70s on Friday.
