Almost a year ago to the day, Dumbo welcomed Governor, a beautifully appointed restaurant from the team behind Gran Electrica. Then along came Hurricane Sandy, which completely flooded the space, causing damage estimated upwards of $350,000. Despite support from the community, by February of this year, the restaurant announced it would not reopen.
Now a crew of DB Bistro Modern alums have taken over the bi-level space, opening Atrium Dumbo at the end of last month. The team retained many of the design elements from its predecessor, including the vibrant living wall, open views into the kitchen and industrial touches echoing the neighborhood's history. The large dinning area offers seating on ground level or in the restaurant's second level balcony.
Executive Chef Laurent Kalkotour's French roots pop up in dishes like Octopus with fennel, Nicoise olives and basil ($12) and Atlantic Cod with fingerling potatoes, tomato and fumet ($24). Other dishes hint at time spent in the States, like the Pork Chop ($24), which comes with spoonbread, piquillo, corn and bacon and the Ricotta Gnudi with summer squash, tomato and oregano ($11).
The expansive wine list contains contemporary and classic vintages, with a special focus on rare wines. Craft beer and rare whiskeys are also on offer, but its the cocktail list that really makes a statement. Take the Olive Oil ($13), made with extra virgin olive oil infused vodka, Amontadillo sherry and sea salt, for example, or the Raspberry & Balsamic ($13), with aged Genever, gomme Syrup and muddled raspberries, topped off with Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.
