Anyone hoping to travel to or from Brooklyn via the R train is going to have a rough year starting on Friday, when service will be largely crippled in the borough thanks to damage wrought by Hurricane Sandy.

But from darkness, comes light: The Rockaway ferry service, which began shuttling commuters stranded in the Rockaways to Manhattan in November, will on Monday begin making an additional stop at the Brooklyn Army Terminal at 58th Street in Sunset Park.

Ferries will leave from Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive in the Rockaways, and stop at 58th Street landing in Brooklyn, Pier 11 in Lower Manhattan and East 34th Street in Midtown. One-way fares will be $2. According to a press release from Council Speaker Christine Quinn, passengers can expect to arrive at Wall Street from Sunset Park in just 15 minutes.

But from light, comes...more darkness: The ferry is a pilot program, and is guaranteed to run only through Labor Day, also known as September 2nd, also known as next month. R train construction will not end until 2014. Those with first grade math skills will note that that's more than a year of R train construction with no ferry service, and those with first grade social skills will throw a temper tantrum over the fact that the city is touting a service that will barely exist to begin with.

Patrick Muncie, an spokesman for the Economic Development Corporation, said the ferry's ridership will be reevaluated to determine whether the service will again be extended.

"We're tracking the numbers, but it's too early to make that determination," he said.
