If you thought Anthony Weiner was just going to slink back into the shadows after being humiliated all over again with graphic new details about his secret sext life, then you don't know Carlos Danger. On the same weekend that his campaign manager resigned over the latest batch of unwanted Weiner porn, Weiner granted an interview with the editorial board of the Staten Island Advance, declaring in no uncertain terms that he would not drop out of the mayoral race. "You're stuck with me," Weiner said. Lucky us.
Sources tell the NY Post that Weiner's campaign manager, Danny Kedem, quit because "he was unaware that Anthony had continued to do this past his resignation, and it caught him by surprise. The timeline didn’t match up to what he was told it was going to be.” Weiner had said that it was possible more evidence of his sexting habit would emerge, but he apparently had not disclosed to his staff that he continued with the behavior over a year after he resigned—sexting Sydney Leathers even when he was telling People magazine that he felt "like a very, very different person."
More Democrats piled on Weiner over the weekend, including longtime Obama advisor David Axelrod, who said on Meet the Press, “At this point, it’s absurd. He is not going to be the next mayor of New York. He is wasting time and space. Americans believe in second chances, but not third chances. It’s time for him to go away, and let New York have its mayor’s race."
But Weiner told the Advance his opponents have the math wrong. "It's not a third chance," he insisted. "That's the problem. I'm not asking for third chances, it's the same stuff that's in my background that has now come back... I did say over and over again that this happened for an extended period of time. And I also said over and over again that it was with more than one person, and I apologize for it. Should I have said, 'Here's where it happened, here's where it happened, here's where it happened, here's where it happened?' Maybe."
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn and mayoral rival didn't hold back either, asking “Has he disqualified himself? Yes. He disqualified himself, but not just because of these scandals. He was in Congress for 12 years. He passed one bill.” And Hillary Clinton, whom Weiner's wife Huma Abedin worked for, is reportedly furious comparisons between Weiner's sext scandal and her decision to stand by Bill Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky fall-out. “The Clintons are pissed off that Weiner’s campaign is saying that Huma is just like Hillary,’’ a source tells the Post. “How dare they compare Huma with Hillary? Hillary was the first lady. Hillary was a senator. She was secretary of state.”
And in case you were wondering, Sydney Leathers will be appearing on Howard Stern's radio show tomorrow. We're stuck with her, too, at least for another week or two.
