[UPDATE BELOW] Back in September, our hearts, hopes and stomachs were piqued by word that a Sonic Drive-In eatery might be headed to Staten Island soon. But now it's almost August, and there is still no Sonic. WHY GOD. WHY.

Apparently, the company says they are not currently planning to open up a Staten Island outpost, despite rumors that several people had purchased rights to bring Blasts, Java Chillers and Toasters to Richmond Valley. "At this time, Sonic does not have confirmed plans to open a Drive-In in the Staten Island area," the chain announced this week. But there's still hope! "However, we are constantly evaluating opportunities to expand in new markets to meet consumer demand, and our goal is to have a SONIC convenient to all customers.”

Alas, we are forced now to mourn the half-priced milkshakes we once believed would be right over the Verrazano. But on the bright side, though, a Dairy Queen finally opened at the St. George ferry terminal last month, so there are Blizzards a-plenty to drown your Sonic sorrows.

[Update 2:27 p.m.]: Great news, fast food addicts! We've been informed that Sonic may very well be opening a Staten Island outpost after all. A reader told SI Live that the company's been putting out ads for Staten Island-based employees of late, and while the reports have not been confirmed, it's likely plans for a Richmond Valley store will be announced in the coming weeks. Here's the Craigslist post looking for managers at a future Staten Island location—peruse at will. Hooray!
