Next Saturday you'll be able to peer in the depths of a Superfund site without ever leaving the shore.

The event, dubbed the Gowanus Voyage, was organized by the Newtown Creek Armada and Brooklyn Atlantis to coincide with City of Water Day. From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the boat launch on 2nd Street near Bond Street, the public will be able to pilot boats and robots equipped with video cameras and environmental sensors to probe the depths of the Gowanus Canal. The data gathered will be part of an exhibit opening in the fall.

Unlike the Superfund cleanup itself, Gowanus Voyage is free, and there will be an observation balloon, canoes courtesy of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club, as well as BBQ and beverages.
