A giant mall planned for just outside the Mets' stadium might soon be more than just a Citi Field of Dreams. Queens Borough President Helen Marshall has OK'd the 1.4-million-square-foot mega-center, saying it will "allow transformation of a blighted and underutilized area into a vibrant full time retail, entertainment and residential community," the Daily News reports.
With Marshall's sign-off, the project must now be approved by the City Planning Commission, which is holding a public hearing at 22 Reade Street in Manhattan tomorrow at 9 a.m. The proposal will then go before the City Council.
The mall is just a fraction of the $3 billion overhaul approved for Willets Point in 2008. A 200-room hotel, retail and restaurant space and interim 20-acre recreational field are all on the docket, but there's certainly no reason to celebrate anytime soon: The process of simply cleaning up the site likely won't start until 2014. You can read the full account of progress so far on the Economic Development Corporation's website here.
