The 21st Annual Dyke March went down on Saturday, and photographer Jim Kiernan was on hand to capture all the action. According to Kiernan, the turnout this year was "HUGE... the biggest I can recall," and featured an All-Female Brasilian Percussion band (Batala Banda de Percussao) that kept the vibe exuberant. The march (don't call it a parade) accepts no corporate sponsorship, climaxed in Washington Square Park, with many participants frolicking in the fountain. According to organizers:

The Dyke March is a protest march, not a parade—we don't ask for a permit, because we have the right to protest. We recognize that we must organize amongst ourselves to fight for our rights, our safety, and for visibility. Thousands of dykes take over the streets every year in celebration of LBTQ women and to protest against ongoing discrimination, harassment, and anti-LBTQ violence in schools, on the job, in our families, and on the streets.

"Most onlookers cheered, but one protestor made certain his displeasure was seen," reports Gay Star News. "He held a sign proclaiming 'Christ died for sin' He followed the parade for its entire length, but was shadowed by two young women with their own message: 'This guy needs a hobby.'"
