Let's start off this weather thingy with the simple part of the forecast: Today will be mostly sunny, dry, warm and breezy with a high near 80 as a weak high pressure system moves across the area. Conditions go way downhill and get really complicated tomorrow, so let's put that off for a moment and indulge ourselves in weather fun facts. Monday's rain brought the monthly total up to 7.96 inches, making this month the seventh wettest June on record. Four of those seven wettest Junes have occurred since 2003. That's a bit of an oddity because, except for last month, neither of the surrounding months of May or July have been especially rainy in recent years. The wettest June on record happened in 2003, when 10.27 inches of rain were measured in Central Park. That record is in jeopardy tomorrow.
A surface low pressure system developing over Chicago today is expected to strengthen and pass offshore over the Delmarva Peninsula tomorrow, positioning itself in just the right location to bring lots of rain to the region. Encouraging that rainfall will be a deepening trough in the jet stream as it passes overhead. If the surface and upper level systems line up as expected we could see 2-3 inches of rain from tomorrow morning through Friday morning. On the bright side, severe weather should mostly stay to the south of the city! Only a slight chance of thunderstorms is expected.
A tight pressure gradient between the storm and the high pressure system behind it should bring us a windy Friday. It's not really clear how long the rain will linger on Friday so let's say there's a better chance of it in the morning. High pressure should be fully in charge over the weekend. Look for quick bike ride around Marcus Garvey Park.
