My leg's been doing this weird twitchy thing and this crazy weather has been too unpredictable are no longer valid excuses to forgo commuting by bike on Friday. Not only is it supposed to be a pleasant 72 degrees, but tomorrow is officially Bike to Work Day. If the convenience, fresh air, and life-enhancing exercise isn't enough to coax you out of your transit rut, maybe free food, coffee, and a party on Brooklyn's waterfront will do the trick.
From 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Transportation Alternatives will host fueling stations at seven different bike commuting hotspots, and will be serving free iced coffee from Brooklyn Roasting Company, Vita Coco (yeah whatever you'll drink it), and food from KIND and Cabot cheese. You'll also have an opportunity to become a TA member and get bike lights and reflective decals.
Sadly, there will be no showers, an amenity that was enjoyed back in 1993 for Bike To Work Week:
Whenever you knock off, TA will be waiting in the Archway under the Manhattan Bridge in DUMBO to throw you a Bike Home From Work Party. Starting at 6:30 p.m. Brooklyn Flea food vendors and Brooklyn Brewery will be on hand to help you ease into the weekend. Also on the bill: a Reflective Fashion Show (we'll never forget our first Reflective Fashion Show), bike-related popup shops, and giveaways.
You'll be close enough to the water to catch the killer sunset, and will also have your bike to pedal the hell away from whatever monster washes onshore. RSVP for the shindig here.
The locations for TA's morning fueling stations are below. Grab your helmet and your manners and just do it.
- Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn tower)
- Manhattan Bridge (Manhattan-side bike path exit)
- Joyce Kilmer Park (E. 161 Street and Grand Concourse)
- Williamsburg Bridge (Brooklyn-side bike path entrance)
- Queensboro Bridge (Queens-side bike path entrance)
- Staten Island Ferry (Whitehall Terminal)
- Hudson River Greenway (W. 72nd Street)
