If you've been worried Brooklyn's completely traded its former grit for hip fixie races and big ugly treehouses, here's a sobering reminder that the L train is not a risk-free shuttle to some artisanal eden of snuggle parties and hand-knitted bicycles. People are still getting murdered in Brooklyn more than in any other borough.

The NYPD recently released a report [pdf] documenting city murder stats from 2012, and it turns out that about 36 percent of last year's 420 murders (a record low, to be fair) came from good old Kings County; the data pinpointed precincts in East New York, East Flatbush and Brownsville as particularly murder-prone, which isn't surprising considering they were called out for being trigger-happy zones last spring. Though the rest of the city wasn't exactly unscathed—27 percent of last year's murders took place in the Bronx, with Queens clocking in at 20 percent, Manhattan at 15 and Staten Island at 2 percent.

More heavy statistics: about 42 percent of last year's murders reportedly were matters of "dispute/revenge," 18 percent were classified as domestic and 11 percent were drug-related. 60 percent of the murder victims were black, and 40 percent of those victims were males between the ages of 16 and 37; women made up about 17 percent of murder victims, though nearly 70 percent of women murdered were killed in incidents of domestic violence.
