Matthew Matagrano, who last month was caught impersonating a corrections officer so he could hang out in his favorite place ever (jail!) is one step closer to realizing his dream: The DA is pushing for Matagrano—also a convicted sex offender!—to spend at least 10 years behind bars.
According to the Post, Matagrano loves lockups so much because "they’re nice", "they gave me food" and “they made me feel important,” indicating that contrary to popular belief, jail is a lot like daycare... and corrections officers are all kindly grandmothers crocheting handcuff cozies.
Apparently Matagrano went unnoticed by his Rikers Island "coworkers" for at least a week, only raising their suspicions when they noticed him shuttling inmates between cells.
Matagrano was convicted in 1996 of sodomizing a 15-year-old boy, and was arrested in 2004 for impersonating a NYC Department of Education official in order to enter two public schools. According to his lawyer, Matagrano is "under a number of medications for a number of issues.” Despite his affection for the clink, Matagrano has pleaded not guilty.
