Bronx Democratic Assemblyman Eric Stevenson was arrested before dawn today on corruption charges, along with four other men who allegedly bribed the politician. According to prosecutors, Stevenson accepted bribes in exchange for pushing legislation to aid his co-defendants’ businesses. He allegedly took fat envelopes of cash on multiple occasions, including one bribe from a businessman trying to score a lucrative contract with Con Edison.
Federal authorities also have a sealed indictment against a second unidentified assemblyman who has cooperated in the corruption probe, and will resign from office. (Politicker speculates that it may be Assemblyman Nelson Castro.) Today's arrests are the latest in a widening corruption scandal that has already ensnared two other elected officials: State Senator Malcolm Smith and Councilman Dan Halloran. Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says the probe has exposed the “show-me-the-money culture” pervading New York politics.
More details about the indictments are expected later today. Here's a copy of the complaint.
