Hey, it's another cold day! Isn't it lovely? This afternoon's high will be lucky to reach 45 degrees as a trough of low pressure over the Canadian Maritimes directs a cold, dry westerly breeze our way. The position of that trough has hardly changed over the past three weeks and is primarily responsible for the long spell of cold weather over eastern North America, and warmer than average weather over Greenland since mid-March.

Today's also a red flag warning day! The high winds, low humidity and lack of any live vegetation could lead to the rapid spread of any wildfires should they start burning. Winds should die down a bit overnight as a large high pressure system approaches from the Midwest. Calm winds make for good radiational cooling. Tomorrow's low might dip below freezing in the city and into the lower 20s in more rural areas. The temperature is expected to rebound to the mid 50s by the afternoon, but that might be bounced down to the upper 40s along the shore if a sea breeze develops.

Friday's forecast is tricky. It looks like a low pressure system will sneak up the coast right as the big surface high moves offshore. That will probably bring a cloudy, cool and possibly rainy day. Once that storm leaves we should have a pleasant weekend with seasonable temperatures and there are indications that the Canadian trough will start to break down early next week.

Finally, happy ninth anniversary on Gothamist to me!

Early Addition: Winning an affordable housing lottery is great unless it's not

Because the apartment might be very small and not that affordable, here are your early links: Congestion pricing is paying for new subway elevators, G.W. Bridge has a new pedestrian walkway, not so many airplane barf bags and more.
