After a long, annoying March, it is FINALLY starting to feel like Spring. And on Saturday it's official—the world's most important place to stuff your face with a wide variety of artisanal cuisine in the open air returns on Saturday to Williamsburg. This year Smorgasburg moves from its birthplace—an empty gravel lot on the East River by The Edge condo—to East River State Park, just next door. The new location is bigger, has more grass, and will hopefully make things a bit less crowded during peak hours.
The Brooklyn Flea also returns this weekend, resurfacing in Fort Greene on Saturday and then in East River State Park on Sunday. (Smorgasburg will be back in Brooklyn Bridge Park on Sunday as well.) Organizer Eric Demby tells us he's excited about the new Williamsburg location, but regrets to inform everyone there will be "no dust. People are going to miss that gravel and what it does, like women in heels, parents with strollers, vendors who breathe. But we're going to trudge onward despite that."
Last year Smorgasburg debuted a local beer, wine, and spirits drinking area called SmorgasBar; Demby says they plan to bring that back, but because the event has relocated, they need to reapply for a liquor license. He doesn't expect the libations to flow again until June. But there will be more shade! Smorgasburg has obtained "big" new umbrellas that the High Line used last year. "We're going to have to work out where these go because they're really big and it's very windy out there," Demby warns.
The Williamsburg Smorgasburg will boast 30-40 new food vendors, including The Big Banana's chocolate covered banana stand. "So glad the chocolate covered bananas are coming back," Demby tells us. "That was a huge loss for us last year." From the press announcement, here are some of the new additions:
- East River Bread, Melissa Weller's (formerly of Roberta's) new bagels and cream cheese line
- La Esquina's Mexican specialties
- Baohaus and Eddie Huang's booth, which adds items such as congee and zha jiang cucumber salad to its bao lineup
- Rockville Market Farm of northern Vermont's fresh sausage and egg gorditas
- Hell's Kitchen's Kyotofu, which will hand-make tofu onsite
- Newcomer Jack's Chedbred and NY Cookery's masterful brisket chili and cornbread stand
- Hannah's Homemade pimento cheese
- El Gato Nacho's made-from-scratch nachos
- Greenpoint shop Bellocq's well-appointed teas
- Two local yogurt-makers—The White Moustache's Persian-style and Kalypso's Greek-style
- Floyd Eats, the beer-cheese offshoot of the popular Atlantic Ave. bar
- Orwasher's freshly-baked breads
- Brooklyn Wok Shop's soup dumplings
Smorgasburg goes down Saturdays in Williamsburg from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at East River State Park, at Kent Avenue and North 7th Street. The Brooklyn Bridge Park Smorgasburg returns on Sunday.
