Nine pedestrians, including a three-year-old boy, were seriously injured yesterday when a car careened into a bus stop in East Flatbush. An NYPD spokesman said that around 6:47 p.m. a woman driving a 2004 Lincoln sedan north on Utica Avenue "inadvertently" jumped the curb and plowed into a bus stop surrounded by scaffolding, some of which subsequently collapsed. The three-year-old and his mother are both in critical condition. The spokesman said there is no criminality suspected at this time.

Investigators told CBS that the incident happened "when the driver of a sedan made a sudden move to avoid a car that was stopped on Utica Ave, causing him to jump a curb and slam into the scaffolding." The driver and her passenger were also injured.

The Post quotes a witness, 30-year-old Paris Rainey, who saw the injured child shortly after the car struck him: “When I looked in the baby’s eyes, I never seen any life. I started to cry."

Because proving "serious moral blameworthiness" is notoriously difficult for prosecutors, many drivers who injure or kill pedestrians are not charged with a crime.
