In our ongoing attempt to send inconsiderate subway riders into a very public shame spiral, we present this photograph of a sleepy cyclist who toted his bike onto the E train this morning. For many cyclists, bringing your bike on the subway is a dreaded pain in the neck, not to mention humiliating. We've only done it a handful of times; mostly when rain forced us underground. But getting hit by lightning can sometimes seem preferable to the dirty looks we get from fellow commuters. Of course, not every cyclist minds a little subway stink-eye.
According to photographer Nic Garcia, this trusting cyclist lashed his bike to an E train pole this morning using a plastic bag, and then took a nap. "I got on around Canal Street around 9:15 and this guy was already there," Garcia tells us. "Right after this, the train was full of people and he did nothing to help. The bike's owner is the guy asleep in the corner wearing sunglasses, there's a messenger bag and helmet by his feet. I got off at 53/5 and he was still asleep."
In the cyclist's defense, we'd sleep easy, too, knowing there isn't a bike thief in NYC who can crack that impenetrable lock.
