The vernal equinox is less than 48 hours away but winter just can't quit us. Instead of a spring-like forecast, we've got a couple days of ugly late-winter weather to get through. A potent low pressure system is moving up through the Ohio Valley is pushing up against a high pressure system over New England. The high is holding off the low for now, but a cruddy rain/snow mix should start late this afternoon. Today's high is expected to be in the mid 30s, which should be just warm enough to keep the city on the rainier side of the rain/snow mix. The gradient is really steep though. Bergen County and southern Westchester County might get an inch or two of snow overnight. Rockland County, northern Westchester, and many other inland counties across Connecticut and New York are under a winter storm warning. High winds, and a couple of inches of snow topped with a nice glaze of freezing rain could make travel hazardous overnight in those locations. The city may see some sleet but the ground's too warm for freezing rain.

By tomorrow the Ohio Valley storm will be gone but its child, a coastal low, will be around to provide another shot of rain. Tuesday should be warmer with a high in the middle 40s. The arrival of spring on Wednesday morning will be greeted with a cold front passage bringing weather that feels more like mid-February. Look for a morning low near 30 degrees and a high only near 40. Gusty northwesterly winds will ensure that it won't feel nearly that warm.

Cool weather is expected to stay around for the remainder of the week as the polar front stays to our south. Thursday and Friday will stubbornly cling to highs around 40 and lows near 30 degrees under clear skies. As of now next weekend is looking only slightly warmer so don't hold your breath for ramps to be ready anytime soon.
