Julio Acevedo, the driver wanted in connection with the horrific Williamsburg crash that killed a young married couple and their unborn child has surrendered in Pennsylvania, according to a police spokeswoman.
According to the Times, Acevedo surrendered to detectives shortly after 5 p.m. at a Turkey Hill Minit Market in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Acevedo had been speaking to police and the media through an intermediary, who promised that Acevedo would surrender today.
Acevedo's speeding BMW struck the livery cab carrying Nachman and Raizy Glauber early Sunday morning, killing the couple and wounding the driver. Acevedo, who was arrested for DWI two weeks ago and previously served time for manslaughter, was rescued from the BMW with the help of a good samaritan and fled the scene.
In an interview with ABC 7, Acevedo said, "I was speeding, trying to get away because I was scared from someone shooting at me. The cab driver came out of nowhere and I couldn't stop." NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters today, “There were no reports of gun shots in the area at that time."
