The NYPD has released its crash data report for January 2013, and the numbers are pretty grim. 28 people, mostly pedestrians, were killed by motorists in January. The pedestrian death count (20 total) is higher than any previous month in 2012, when the highest monthly death toll for pedestrians and cyclists combined was 17. 1,107 pedestrians and 190 cyclists were reportedly injured in collisions with motor vehicles, but because these individuals were deemed not likely to die, there will be no criminal investigation by the NYPD's woefully understaffed Accident Investigation Squad.
All told, there were 15,599 motor vehicle crashes in the city in January. (According to the NYPD, the biggest contributing factor by far was "driver inattentiveness/distraction.") But apparently the NYPD's stats are not 100% accurate; Streetsblog points out that a woman who was killed by a private sanitation truck while biking in the Flatiron district is not among those counted.
And it appears there were no criminal charges filed in any of the 14 fatal crashes that were documented in the media. On January 30th, three pedestrians were killed in five hours, and the NYPD was quick to announce that in each case, there was no criminality suspected. Here's the report:
