A cop who falsely claimed a Brooklyn man tried to run him over in a car is going to do some time for his lies. But not that much time, Sheepshead Bites reports. After being caught in his lie by a surveillance tape, officer Diego Palacio pleaded guilty today in Brooklyn Supreme Court in exchange for his resignation from the NYPD and four days in prison. Just one day more than 55-year-old MTA engineer John Hockenjos was locked up when Palacio said he tried to run him over last year!
Though the Brooklyn DA's office says that Hockenjos okayed the plea deal, he claims that isn't true. And he says he's scared. “This individual spends four days in prison, with no probation, and he gets out of jail today or tomorrow and he’s a free man to do whatever he wants,” worried Hockenjos, who spent three days in jail after the false report. “And I have to be in pure fear that there could be retribution. I should not be in this position; there should at least be probation.”
Palacio—who falsely claimed that Hockenjos drove his car at “a high rate of speed” towards him, forcing him “to jump out of the way”—was facing charges of official misconduct, offering a false instrument for filing, falsifying business records, making an apparently sworn false statement, perjury and making a punishable false written statement before he took the deal.
