An NYPD spokesman says no arrests have been made in the hit and run in Bushwick that left 38-year-old cyclist Julian Valencia critically injured early yesterday morning. The Daily News reports that Valencia is a construction worker who builds bikes in his spare time. "He's always riding his bicycle," Valencia's brother Fabio says. "That's how he got everything…I feel horrible, I don't even know what to say." Valencia's friend, Luke Patterson, added, "He's a great guy, really well-liked. He was planning on building me a bike. Unfortunately, New York is a really tough place to ride bikes."
The car that struck Valencia at the intersection of Central Avenue and George Street was described by police as a "silver sedan." Anyone with information regarding the crime can call Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477). You can also submit their tips through the Crime Stoppers' website or by texting tips to CRIMES (274637), then enter TIP577.
According to the most recent motor vehicle accident report from the NYPD [PDF], 276 cyclists and 1,034 pedestrians were injured in traffic in November 2012. Very few of these incidents are investigated by personnel with adequate training.
