A 21-year-old woman was killed by a hit and run driver in the Bronx yesterday morning in the city's fourth hit and run pedestrian fatality in four days. The victim, who the Daily News identifies as Amanda Garcia, was walking in front of 2070 Westchester Avenue at around 6:04 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle with such force that her body shattered the rear window of a nearby minivan. Garcia is survived by her three month-old son. An NYPD spokesman said this morning that no arrests have been made in the case.
According to the Daily News, investigators believe the vehicle involved was a black Nissan Altima, and that a fuel leak showed the driver fled south on the Cross-Bronx Expressway.
Garcia's death comes one day after 11-year-old Miguel Torres was struck and killed in Queens by a dump truck that failed to yield to Torres' right-of-way. The driver was given a traffic summons for killing Torres, but no criminal charges were filed.
On Wednesday, 38-year-old Sheena Mathew was struck by a vehicle outside her home on Little Neck Parkway. The driver fled, and Mathew left behind her husband and two children. In Jamaica, 30-year-old Maria Beria was struck by a speeding driver who didn't stop after killing the mother of three.
Though it wasn't a hit and run, 33-year-old Aileen Martinez was struck and killed by an MTA bus on 59th Street near Central Park on Wednesday night, making it the fifth pedestrian death in the city in four days.
