Police are searching for a man who tried to rape a woman as she jogged on the esplanade in East River Park yesterday, just before noon. According to the NYPD, the unidentified victim was running through the park when she was tackled from behind by a suspect described as a black male in his late 20s, wearing a gray sweatshirt and green pants.
An NYPD spokesman says the man tried to tear off the woman's clothing, but she successfully fought him off. She sought help from workers in the park and was taken to Beth Israel hospital with minor injuries. Her assailant remains at large. Initial reports suggested that the would-be rapist is a teenager, but the NYPD tells us this morning they're searching for a suspect in his late 20s.
Anyone with information can share it anonymously through the Crime Stoppers hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS, or text CRIMES and then enter TIP577.
