Brass Monkey, the delightfully un-douchey Meatpacking District pub, has opened up The Copper Room, a restaurant-within-a-restaurant starting today. The new space continues the Monkey's laid-back, rustic decor with wood and copper (duh) walls made from salvaged factory parts, plus pieces of the Coney Island Thunder Carousel, which was damaged by fire in 1910. There are other pieces of New York history on display, like the mahogany bar taken from the Grand Ballroom of the Old Puck Building and brass doors from the original Macy's flagship showroom. Per the press release, the whole endeavor is "dedicated to saluting all things USA."
The Copper Room offers similar fare to its attached sister restaurant, with American and Irish-inspired pub fare from Daniel Parilla. The lager-battered fish and chips ($16) and a three cheese sandwich with tomato and basil ($8) make the menu, as does a roasted kabocha squash kale salad ($12) and a spicy beef brisket sandwich ($12). Bi-monthly themed dinners will begin soon, promising a "hands-on" experience to patrons that echos the neighborhood's original purpose. Expanding on the Brass Monkey's impressive selection of 75 beers, the Copper Room adds an additional nine draft lines that will feature a rotation selection of American beers. First up: Greenpoint Harbor's Black Duck Porter and Alphabet City's Kolsh Lager, among others.
