R train riders, rejoice! In the weeks since Hurricane Sandy much of the city's subway system has been brought back online—with a few glaring exceptions. Sadly the Rockaways are going to be riding the H train for some time and South Ferry station isn't likely to see straphangers for even longer, but at least the R train should finally be back to normal by the end of the week. Small things!
Second Avenue Sagas reports, and the MTA confirms to us, that Carmen Bianco, Senior Vice President of the Department of Subways, announced this morning at the MTA Board’s committee hearings that the Authority hopes to restore R train service between Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan by this Friday. About time!
Since the superstorm struck in the end of October the R has been running in two sections—between Bay Ridge and Jay Street and from Forest Hills to Whitehall Street—while the MTA dried and cleaned out the Montague St. Tunnel. And the subway split has been, to put it lightly, a real pain in the neck for Brooklyn commuters looking to get into the city (not to mention the 2/3 and 4/5 riders who have seen their trains extra crowded the last six weeks). Merry Christmas!
