Yesterday, the White House announced that President Obama would travel to Newtown, Connecticut this afternoon, to meet with the families of victims of the mass shooting and to thank first responders. Then, he will speak at an interfaith vigil for victims' families and others families.
On Friday, the President was visibly emotional, wiping tears away as he spoke about the young victims, the 20 children ages six and seven, "Our hearts are broken. They know their children's innocence has been torn away from them too early. as a country we've been through this too many times. These children are our children. We're going to have to come together and take meaningful action to prevent tragedies like this, regardless of the politics."
Obama added, "We've endured too many of these tragedies in the past few years." It was less than five months ago that he went to Aurora, Colorado, after the July 20 massacre at a movie theater, meeting with victims and victims' families. He said then, "I confessed to them that words are always inadequate in these kinds of situations, but that my main task was to serve as a representative of the entire country and let them know that we are thinking about them at this moment and will continue to think about them each and every day, and that the awareness that not only all of America but much of the world is thinking about them might serve as some comfort."
