Liberty Island's Not Looking So Good After Sandy

Lady Liberty might not be swimming in the New York Harbor post-Sandy, but her home base took a pretty bad beating. Yesterday, reporters got a first look at Liberty Island since the storm hit last month.
Camera crews captured images of splintered ferry docks, destroyed fences, a cracked sea wall and shattered paving bricks, as well as other significant damage from a storm surge that flooded three-quarters of the island. The island's superintendent, David Luchsinger, is Liberty Island's sole resident, and he says he won't be returning to his destroyed home even once the area is cleaned up.
Officials have no timetable on Liberty Island's return to glory, and say the island and Statue will not be opening at all this year. Neighboring Ellis Island is also closed, shutting out thousands of tourists and third grade field trips indefinitely.
