As part of an investigation into the death of a skateboarder who was killed by a truck driver at Union Square on Tuesday, the NYPD has released this video (below) from a surveillance camera overlooking Union Square West. The video begins at the moment when the skateboarder, an NYU student named Kyle Larson, fell underneath the truck. The NYPD has released the video because they're seeking the cyclist seen in fluorescent clothing at the bottom of the frame. According to one witness, Larson had swerved to avoid the cyclist, who was biking opposite the direction of traffic.
"Both the skateboarder and the truck were moving south on University place," wrote a commenter on City Room who claims to be a witness, "The skateboarder was moving along side the truck. A man on a bicycle riding north on University place caused the skateboarder to swerve into the truck with his board and himself going underneath the vehicle. The truck driver was not doing anything wrong and probably could not have seen the Boarder who was moving along the right side of the truck."
Larson was pronounced DOA at Beth Isreal Hospital. The unidentified driver remained at the scene and was not charged. NYU Local reports that Larson, 20, was originally from Manhasset, Long Island and was enrolled in NYU's College of Arts and Sciences. An email from members of the Manhasset high school marching band community reads, "Fellow student musicians who knew Kyle saw him as a very passionate musician who dedicated the most part of his high school career to the music program at Manhasset High School. The community lost a very special person last night. I assure you his legacy will not be forgotten for many years."
It's perhaps worth noting, as Streetsblog does, that the crash "occurred on a block that DOT intended to use as a part-time pedestrian plaza until the agency capitulated to neighborhood NIMBYs."
Anyone with information about the cyclist seen in this video can contact the NYPD anonymously at 1-800-577 TIPS.
