JFK airport, we sadly already knew, has trouble keeping tabs on kitties but it seems they've also got a problem with iPad minis. On Monday night 3,600 of the shiny new Apple baubles (worth roughly $1.5 million) went missing from JFK. Airport investigators currently think the missing tablets were taken in an inside job (duh).
The caper went down after 11 p.m. on Monday when, the Post reports, the thieves "used one of the airport’s own forklifts to load two pallets of the tablet computers into a truck." They seem to have been spooked by an airport worker returning from dinner, though, because they still left three more pallets of the tablets behind.
According to the tabloid's sources, "the crooks arrived at Building 261 around 11 p.m. in a white tractor trailer marked with the name CEVA on the side," and took the stash of minis, which had just arrived in a shipment from a company called Cargo Airport Services. Investigators have already polygraphed a number of employees, but the thieves remain at large.
Now, if this all sounds very similar to the 1978 Lufthansa heist at JFK made famous in GoodFellas, well, it should. That multi-million dollar robbery took place in the exact same building on December 11, 1978. Hopefully [historical spoiler alert] it won't end in quite as much bloodshed, however.
