Remember back in the spring when an architect wanted to build a giant ski slope over the Lower East Side? Well, that dream has yet to come to fruition, but if it ever does there will be a Manhattan "mountain lodge" ready to welcome all those urban skiers. Tomorrow, the Hudson Lodge, an "outdoor urban ski resort-themed bar," opens to the public in the private park/terrace inside the Hudson Hotel. What awaits you inside this "cozy apres-ski oasis?" Let's find out!
The terrace is already outfitted with a glass roof and space heaters for the winter, and now the hotel has added a fifty-foot tent to increase the "outdoors inside" feeling, plus strings of bulbs across the ceiling to mimic the night sky. Animal hide rugs, vintage toboggans and even an enormous wooden bear lend to the rustic mountain feel and some sheepskin throws keep guests cozy while they sip cocktails and nibble hearty winter fare. But most intriguing of all, snow machines pumping out delicate flakes of the fluffy stuff will operate for a few hours each evening for added wintertime immersion.
The cocktail and beverage list, curated by alcohol aficionado Steve Olson, has some old standbys like an Aztec hot chocolate with Oaxacan chocolate, Chile de Arbol, Vida Mezcal, Khalua Cream and chocolate mole bitters plus a special Hot Chocolate Bar with a variety of sweet toppings. No standard bottle service here, as bottles come served inside giant ice blocks with non-traditional mixers like the Five Spice simple syrup, made with star anise, cinnamon, clove, rosemary and ginger. A selection of local beers from Ommegang and Brookyln Brewery will be available as well.
As every skier knows, fortifying with some hearty grub after you hit the slopes is paramount, and Hudson Lodge does not disappoint in that department. A small shack—made with reclaimed wood, of course—has been erected under the tent, serving up gut-busting riffs on mountain fare. A crock of Green Chili Fondue, made with Cave-Aged Gruyere, Comte, Appenzeller, Brooklyn Lager, Burnt Garlic, Onions, Pork and Tomatillos, comes out bubbling with lots of toasted bread for dipping. Toeing the line between sweet and savory is the S'more Grilled Cheese, which combines cheddar and gruyere cheeses with Nutella, ricotta and maple syrup. If you're still craving sweets even after all that hot chocolate, freshly baked chocolate peanut butter and caramel cookies can be had piping hot and gooey from the oven.
As with any mountain destination spot, we warn you to always beware of Cougars.
