More than 31,000 customers of the Long Island Power Authority are still without electricity in the Rockaways. Boats still litter roadways, signs warn looters of grave penalties and rumors swirl about the National Guard shooting anyone on sight after curfew. But the area is finally getting some much-needed public transportation back: today A train service was extended to Howard Beach, where a bus will transport riders to the Far Rockaway station at Mott Avenue. A ferry will also take riders to and from Beach 108th Street and Beach Channel Drive to Lower and Midtown Manhattan during rush hours, starting tomorrow.

The Daily News also has a report on how firefighters of Ladder 137, Engine 268 at a station affectionally called The Beach House in the Rockaways are working 24 hour shifts. Fires are becoming more common as people attempt to light their homes with candles, and gas leaks across the peninsula only make them more dangerous.

To find ways you can help residents of the Rockaways, go here and here.
