New York City has few Indonesian restaurants and even fewer Balinese eateries, but the Van Leeuwen artisan ice cream crew, along with chef Sophia Loch and pastry chef Chelsea Wilkes, are hoping to get New Yorkers on board -- and judging by the initial response to their new restaurant Selamat Pagi, it looks like they're onto something. It has only been serving Balinese deliciousness in Greenpoint for a couple of weeks, but has already garnered heady praise from Yelp reviewers for its traditional, yet fresh, local, and seasonal curries and seafood.
Selamat Pagi, which means "good morning" in Indonesian, focuses on traditional Balinese food, with breakfast options like a Sticky Black Rice with fresh mango ($10), a Bali Fish Salad dinner entree (costs $13, made with blue fish, turmeric, chilies, shallots, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaf, cucumbers, and rice) and a Lemongrass fish curry with noodles, fresh cucumbers, and roasted peanuts ($13.50).
It's open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and will of course be serving Van Leeuwen ice creams in the usual flavors and mouth-watering Balinese inspired desserts (think lemongrass ice cream and coconut creme brulee).
