The "slick and sloppy" first Nor'Easter of the year came, it snowed and it left even more people without power. Yesterday Con Ed's website said the number of its NYC customers without power was down to 29,554, and today that has jumped to 37,649 customers without power, according to the utility's website. In total the utility says about 55,000 customers in the city and Westchester lost power at some point due to the storm. The problem is that yesterday's wet, heavy snow—the city got between 3" and 6"—kept bringing "down power lines faster than repair crews could keep up."
According to Con Ed, workers are already out and are trying to restore power. Who gets juice back first? "Priorities for #ConEdison customers today are critical customers (hospitals, etc.), safety and customers who have been out the longest," the utility tweeted this morning. But if you lost power yesterday you could still luck out! "Restoring downed transmission could theoretically restore some nor’easter folks first," Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin told the Post. "But basically the folks who’ve been out from Sandy are our priority."
As far as power loss goes, the Nor'Easter hurt worse outside of the city. According to the Times:
About 151,000 Public Service Electric and Gas customers in New Jersey had no power before the new storm arrived. The company said the storm caused an additional 90,000 power failures statewide. By late Wednesday, Jersey Central Power and Light was reporting more than 219,000 customers without electricity.
At least the latest storm is over? Now to pick up all those trees and power lines the storm took down...
