This morning, Con Edison said it has restored power to 225,000 customers so far after Hurricane Sandy struck. However, that still leaves 676,000 customers without power (227,000 in Manhattan, 103,000 in Queens, 59,000 in Brooklyn, 83,000 in Staten Island and 36,000 in the Bronx; also, there are 166,000 in Westchester County). But it hopes that it can restore power by tomorrow and/or Saturday to the rest of the areas.
According to the press release, "The company expects to make significant progress restoring electricity over the next two days due to Wednesday's damage assessment and field work planning. Additional crews from around the country continue arriving from as far away as California to assist New Yorkers. Cargo planes are unloading their equipment and will be assigned throughout the area." However, Con Ed also notes, "Safety for customers, Con Edison employees, and contractors is the No. 1 priority. Crews still face hundreds of wires down in New York City and Westchester County, where more than 600 roads are closed. Trees also block access to wires and equipment throughout the system and hundreds of vaults are flooded."
Another problem for some Manhattan customers is that some buildings may have basement flooding or are served by equipment severely damaged by the hurricane—that might make getting power back online longer. Last night, Con Ed announced that it had restored power to Brighton Beach and a small part of lower Manhattan, "Bounded by Vesey to the N, West St to the W, Bway/State St to the E and tip of Manhattan to the S."
Keep in mind, a customer is not a household—a building can be a customer, so imagine those apartment buildings and the number of people affected...
